WELCOME!

If you love Alaskan Malamutes, you're at the right site! You've found Chesapeake Area Alaskan Malamute Protection.  Our mission is to rescue Alaskan Malamutes in Maryland, Pennyslvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and DC.  We rescue from dog pounds and other bad situations, get the dogs healthy, and find new, loving homes for them.  Please take the time to read this website before contacting us!

Chesapeake Area Alaskan Malamute Protection (CHAAMP) is a non-profit 501(c)(3), all volunteer, rescue organization dedicated to helping our favorite breed, Malamutes.  CHAAMP is an affiliate of the national rescue organization, AMAL.  CHAAMP volunteers have been rescuing Malamutes in our area since the early 1990's.

In 2007, CHAAMP found new homes for 30 Malamutes.  In 2006, we pulled 32 Mals, in 2005 we rescued 33; in 2004 we rescued 27.

In addition to rescuing Malamutes, giving them needed vet care, then finding them suitable homes, we offer training tips, behavioral information, and support to Malamute owners who want to keep their dogs but need help.

Unfortunately every year we turn away more Malamutes than we rescue.  You may wonder why there are so many needing help.  We wonder that as well!

The sad truth is that many people refuse to understand that a dog is a lifetime commitment.  People dump their dogs at shelters, push them out of their cars onto busy roads, move away and leave the dogs chained up on their old property to die, or shoot them.
You may believe that only a sick person would do such a thing, but that's not the case.  Many people dump their dog the moment he or she becomes inconvenient.  Some of the "reasons"  we've heard:
  • "We bought the dog for our son and he's going off to college so we don't need it any more."
  • "This dog's too damned old!"
  • "My puppy takes more time than I thought she would."
  • "We're moving."
  • "I didn't know they had to go outside every day!"
So now you know why we exist!  Interested in learning more and seeing some gorgeous dogs?  Read on!

If you're interested in adopting one of our Malamutes AND you live in DC, MD, VA, WV, PA, NJ, or NY, check out our Why Adopt, How to Adopt, and Available Dogs links.  Once you've read this information, feel free to ask us to email you an application.   Please understand that not all of the dogs will be up on our website, so don't make your decision based on the dogs you see.   If you have questions about our adoption procedures or application, email MalamuteRescue@gmail.com
Why should you adopt a Mal instead of buying one from a pet store, an internet site, or a newspaper ad?  Click here Why Adopt?
Adoption isn't for you?  If you want to show your new Malamute in conformation, you'll need to buy a pup or adult from a reputable, professional, and ethical Malamute breeder.  Don't make a single call without talking to us first!  Please email the CHAAMP Director at MalamuteRescue@gmail.com.  We can tell you what to look for in an ethical breeder, who the reputable AMCA breeders are, what questions to ask, and what to watch out for.  We can also tell you what our experiences have been with local breeders.
Want to adopt but you're not in CHAAMP's area?  Go to www.malamuterescue.org/ rescue/listorg.html to bring up a list of all AMAL rescue affiliates in the U.S.   We accept applications from residents of DC, MD, NJ, NY, PA, VA, & WV.
Is a Malamute right for you?  Click on “About Malamutes”  to find out.  Mals are certainly not the right breed for everyone, as they are extremely intelligent, independent thinkers, easily bored, and have a strong desire to be with their ‘pack', in this case their family.
If you need to find a new home for your Mal and you live in our coverage area, please email the CHAAMP Director at  MalamuteRescue@gmail.com for help.  Please do not take your dog to a shelter without talking to us first!  Dogs given to shelters by their owners are the first ones to be killed. (The shelters have to save room for strays in case their owners are looking for them.) And whatever you do, please don't drop the dog off somewhere to give the dog a "better chance" to make it.  We will help you if we can.  But you have to give us some time to work -- don't wait to contact us a week or a day before you move.
